FAQs
FAQs
Why is vitamin D important?
Vitamin D is a hormone that is synthesized in our skin with the help of sunlight, which is why it is also known as the sunshine vitamin. It contributes to the normal absorption of calcium in the body, thus maintaining healthy bones and teeth. At the same time, it also contributes to the functioning of muscles and the immune system.
Why does vitamin D deficiency occur?
Vitamin D deficiency is a health problem all over the world and also here. Research shows that up to 80% of Slovenians do not have sufficient vitamin D intake. This is especially true in winter, when we are less exposed to the sun, and clothing and creams with UV protection also have an additional effect of inhibiting vitamin D production. In addition, few foods contain the sunshine vitamin in a quantity worth mentioning. These are fatty fish, fish oil, liver and egg yolk, while plant foods contain practically no vitamin D.
Therefore, for people with insufficient exposure to sunlight, as well as for newborns, infants and children, an additional intake of vitamin D through dietary supplements is recommended.
What can affect the amount of vitamin D in our body?
- Use of sun creams with a high protection factor.
- Clothing that blocks the sun's contact with our skin.
- The lightness of our skin: darker-skinned people need to be exposed to UV rays for longer than lighter-skinned people to obtain sufficient vitamin D.
- The time of year: In winter and autumn, when there is less sunlight, the body is less likely to produce enough vitamin D.
- Working hours: working in dark rooms until late in the afternoon, even in summer, can lead to under-exposure to UV rays, which are crucial for the formation of adequate amounts of vitamin D.
Where does the vitamin D contained in Valens oral sprays come from?
Valens vitamin D oral sprays contain mainly the natural form of vitamin D3 from lanolin, a yellow waxy substance obtained from sheep fleece (sheep's wool). This is a form identical to that which our body forms with the help of the sun's rays, and for which excellent absorption has been demonstrated. Especially for vegans, we have also developed Valens D-Natural Vegan oral spray with vitamin D3 of plant origin (algae).
Can pregnant women also take Valens vitamin D products?
Yes, vitamin D is also essential for pregnant women. What's more, research shows that more than half of Slovenian pregnant women have insufficient vitamin D levels. In one of the studies conducted in Slovenia, up to 55% of the participating pregnant women had low vitamin D levels. Therefore, pregnant women should also take care that their amounts of this important vitamin are sufficient, especially in autumn and winter, when there is less sunlight.
Does it matter when I take vitamin D?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, so it is recommended to take it during or immediately after a meal.
Can we get enough vitamin D even without dietary supplements?
The only "natural" way to obtain sufficient vitamin D is its natural synthesis in the skin under the direct influence of sunlight. Due to the length of the day and the angle and intensity of solar radiation, vitamin D is most actively produced from April to September around midday. This means that, in principle, it is not necessary to take vitamin D3 supplements in summer, as the sun is stronger and we also move more outdoors.
If you think you are not getting enough vitamin D even during this time (either you are indoors most of the time or you avoid the sun), it would be best to consult your doctor about it or have a self-paid vitamin D test done at a laboratory.
Deficiency is very frequent during the coldest times of the year, when the sun's rays are too weak to synthesize vitamin D in our skin. Only a few foods are rich in vitamin D, namely fatty marine fish (e.g. salmon), and in very small quantities also eggs, milk and dairy products.
Given that the amount of vitamin D3 in food sources is therefore negligible and that studies show a high level of vitamin D3 deficiency worldwide, experts advise supplementation with food supplements.
Is it absolutely necessary to take vitamin D3 supplements?
In summer, when the sun is stronger and we move more outdoors, it is generally not necessary to take vitamin D supplements. Here it should be taken into account that protective clothing and creams with protection factor inhibit the formation of vitamin D3. Additional intake is necessary in autumn and winter when, due to geographical latitude, vitamin D biosynthesis in the skin is not efficient enough and the risk of deficiency is high.
Infants and older adults are at particular risk of deficiency. Firstborns do not receive enough vitamin D3 through breast milk, and exposure to sunlight can be very dangerous for their sensitive skin. The elderly tend to spend more time indoors, and their need for vitamin D is even greater due to increased bone breakdown.
According to studies and research, which show a high incidence of vitamin D3 deficiency among Slovenians, vitamin D supplementation is absolutely necessary, at least in the coldest part of the year.
Can Valens D Junior and Valens D-natur also be used by adults?
Of course. Due to their composition, the products are suitable for children ( Valens D Junior ) and babies ( Valens D-natur ) as well as for adults. To cover the vitamin D needs of our organism, adults can increase the number of sprays they consume per day. Instead of one spray, you can take 2 to 6 sprays a day.
