Sensitive and irritated skin? We give you the treatments to take care of it

Maria Teresa Moneo

Today we explain why irritation occurs and the impact it can have on the skin, plus we offer recommended treatments to soothe and restore comfort.... making your skin feel better in the shortest possible time is essential!

Do you have sensitive and irritated skin?

Sensitive and irritated skin is considered a state that any type of skin can go through, through symptoms such as itching, redness that may be due to pathological causes (dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis, or even allergies and irritative acne causes), there are also external factors that cause irritations such as extreme weather changes, application of cosmetic products with certain allergenic or intolerant ingredients for certain types of skin, sun exposure, etc....

Irritation appears in stages - not all degrees of sensitivity produce visible reactions. In many cases, it occurs below the surface of the skin, but it is also a cumulative response and over time may evolve into visible rashes or redness.

When irritation appears, you want to solve it as soon as possible, to get your skin healthy again.

What causes irritation?

  • Sun damage. Redness, peeling and flaking are clear signs that sun damage has occurred and as a result the skin becomes irritated and inflamed leading to erythema.
  • Environmental factors, climate, weather conditions, changes in heat and cold, and air pollution are some of them.
  • Perfumes, including aromatic vegetable oils, which, although you might not think so, are harmful to the skin. The perfumes in certain cosmetic products, whether synthetic or natural, are causes of skin irritation, although most consumers want cosmetic products that smell good, the way most perfumes impart scent is through a volatile reaction.
  • Post aesthetic medical treatments that cause bruising, redness and inflammation such as chemical peels or injectable treatments, as they can break capillaries. It is very important to restore the natural state of balance of the skin, using treatments with anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling properties with soothing effect.

Effects of Skin Irritation

When skin is irritated, the impact can be much more profound than just redness. Irritation reduces the skin's ability to repair itself naturally, supporting substances such as collagen and elastin are broken down and the skin's natural protective barrier is weakened, causing results such as increased hyper-pigmentation spots and accelerated signs of skin aging.

In people with oily, acne-prone skin, inflammation can affect the nerve endings in the pores by stimulating the production of hormones, promoting increased sebum production and causing the pores to become more dilated.
